Hold High Pairs Over Low Pairs
A high pair (Jacks, Queens, Kings, Aces) is an immediate 1-for-1 payout and can improve to two pair, three-of-a-kind, full house, or four-of-a-kind. Always hold high pairs. Low pairs (2s through 10s) don't pay unless they improve, but you should still hold them over single high cards or four to an inside straight.
Four to a Flush Beats a Low Pair
If you have four cards of the same suit, discard the fifth card (and break a low pair if necessary) to draw for the flush. A flush pays 6-for-1, and you have about a 19% chance to complete it. This is more valuable than the ~11% chance to improve a low pair to two pair or better. However, keep a high pair over four to a flush.
Open-Ended Straight Draws Are Strong
Four to an open-ended straight (e.g., 7-8-9-10) gives you 8 outs to complete the straight, while four to an inside straight (e.g., 7-8-10-J) gives you only 4 outs.
